If you work for a big box gym or even a franchise, it’s possible that they have their own methodology. Within that methodology, you have SOPs in place (Standard Operating Procedures).
If you are just starting up your gym business, you’ll learn quickly that you can’t do it all by yourself and no one will execute the task as well as you do. As a business owner, you treat every opportunity with exceptional service. From how you tour them to qualifying them, closing them, and upselling. Once that’s done, you have momentary relief because you know you’ve completed the prospecting process, but now the member experience begins. This is where you have to develop your staff. From the front desk greeting them and being knowledgeable about the business, to your personal trainers introducing themselves and persuading those new members to have a consultation with them.
Every different team member position should have an SOP and daily cadences. Over time will identify each department’s cadence, but for now, let’s focus on your personal trainers.
Onboarding properly is crucial and helps empower your trainers by teaching them cadences and tools to help them grow their PT business and obtain clients. But it also allows you to build a solid revenue stream of PT.
There are many advance ways that you can help your trainer get started, but I will start with what I call the essential task.
The task goes as follows:
- Calling active members
- Calling non-active members
- Setting PT assessments
- Walking the floor and collecting referrals
- initial small goals, such as one new client at the end of the week minimum.
Now as I mentioned, these are relatively standard go-dos but they are essential for starting and creating a business for themselves. When it comes to hiring a personal trainer, you have to think along these terms: you have one month to get them going and for them to understand and accept the process.
Each of those five tips, I could deep dive into, from phone etiquette to sales process and post sales, such as focusing on renewals. But I will stop there for now.
What are some SOPs or daily cadences that you have for your trainer after you’ve hired them?
